Every day is a holiday of some sort.
Most are bullshit.
Tomorrow though is one I can get behind. It is national Grandparent's Day.
Mine are gone but not forgotten. I lost my first Grandparent in1985 and my last one in 2003.
The deer have been hard on the flowers that I put on their graves this year for some reason and in spite of planting marigolds and geraniums amongst the petunias, it seems like they want to take a taste of everything. I have tried sprays and dog hair, but the rain washes those scents away and soon I will see a petunia plant lying on the ground pulled out by the roots.
In any case, being as it is Grandparents day, I picked up some Mums for fall and will go up and replace the flowers. I will put a nice bright yellow mum on my Mom's grave. If she were around and heard me swearing at the deer as I stuff the petunias back in the dirt she would say something like...."oh, they need to eat too and sometimes maybe they like a little treat."
My Grandpa Jim (my dad's dad) would say something like, "Let em eat and get fat because we will be eating them in December."
It's a silly holiday just the same, but I kind of like it and hopefully will have time to call the granddaughter...if she doesn't call first.
