What's the best quality to have in a friend?

@ExperienceDLT I'm always interested in why people place such importance on loyalty for it's own sake.
I think integrity is far mor important.

If a friend is mistreated, if they are a victim of slander or untrue gossip, if they're accused of something they haven't done, or if they fall on hard times, I can understand the value of loyalty and active support.
But if a friend does something seriously wrong, I would only support them to own up and face the consequences.
If a friend did something that seriously hurt me, eg assault, theft, betrayal of me or anyone else, or cruelty to an animal, or harming the environment -- that would be the end of that friendship. For me, those a non-negotiables.

I'd be 'very interested to hear more about your thinking on what exactly loyalty means and why it is the primary value for you.
Not for argument's sake, but so I can better understand a different perspective.
