But they kept leaving me weird messages if I didn't respond right away. No one has the right to force my friendship.

Id say the golden rule is block or ignore anyone who acts weird if you don't reply to messages in your own time. Some people have real lives to deal with and anyone who shows they don't understand that by being demanding of quick replies should be avoided.
