Anything at all I can do to stop my best friend from joining a cult?

We are both 72 years old. We live about 200 miles apart. I am planning a visit to her soon, probably by next month.

She and I have had a wonderful friendship, but we have rarely been able to spend time together for several complicated reasons involving extremely demanding and difficult families. (For the details of this situation, you can read my story under: I Wan To Know The Truth Behind My Family's Lies and Secrets).

She has been lonely since her husband of nearly 50 years died last year. A cult group has found her and they are "love bombing" her. She seems to have no resistance, and I feel sure they will ruin her life and, if they can, our friendship. She does not perceive any danger, though she laughs as she tells me that everyone keeps warning her.

I keep thinking of a quotation about that (I think it's from A Thousand Lives, the recent book by Julia Scheer about Jonestown and the people who died there) that really fits this situation:

"Nobody joins a cult. "

How true that is!

Unfortunately due to your friends loss, she is very vulnerable and prone to cult contact. They love bomb, so she feels companionship that she is missing. Eventually they will win her over, and. You being so far away doesn't help...try to stay in closer contact with her and give her more support if you can.

@Tara10: I'm going to visit her within the next few weeks.

😔 Good luck. There only think I can think of it too tell her how Jesus said "By their fruits you shall know them", and try to point out some of the bad results already occurring, i.e., alienation of long time friends, and whatever else might be happening.

I guess I need to proof these posts! Anyway, have you made the trip to see her yet?

What kind of cult? How did she get into contact with them?
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@HijabbaDabbaDoo: They were passing out pamphlets in her neighborhood. They are a church but one known to behave like a cult.

You can't really do anything, people make their own decisions

@krf336: One of the characteristics of cults is their ability to eradicate common sense and individual will. But I understand what you're saying. If she really is determined to join them, there is not much I can do.

well at that age she aint got much of a life left

@TheCoolestCat: She's in OK health. And according to life insurance stats, women's average age at death is 84; 12 more years. My own grandmother died at the age of 98, and she was still living on her own with no help and gardening every weekday.

true my granny lived to 102 but she lived with my aunt for the last 10 years ish
