In my opinion... I think he probably doesn't trust himself to be alone with another girl. :/ That, or he thinks the girl has an ulterior-motive.

They apologize because while they don't want to hurt the female friend's feelings, they want to make clear that their girlfriends' feelings are ultimately more important to them. She is whose feelings they are choosing to give priority in this situation. 🙁
