How do you not judge current friends based on past friends' actions but still not get taken advantage of?

Each person is an individual with his or her own personality, character and demeanor. It's not right to judge current friends on the actions of past ones. It is however wise to always be cautious and alert, as to be aware of others words and actions in order to protect your own interests.
