How to meet people and make friends in a new place?

Been living in Sydney for almost a year now but have not made new friends.

If I wanted to speak with some people, I have to phone up my friends from back home.

I'm shy with strangers and don't go out a lot, but also want to meet some people and cultivate good friendships with others.

What would be the best way to start given I am not a very outgoing person?

whenever I moved to a new city I looked for groups that I might be interested in and joined. I could still keep to myself until I felt comfortable but it always ended well and I met new people.

When you said looked for groups, what do you mean by that?

@casualdilettante: Times have changed and you have way more options than I did.You have the internet. I think you could really find something by googling something you are interested in and see if there is anything like that in your new city. The local newspapers/newsletters always have that kind of info too
