Am I Overstepping?

A good friend of mine is a language wiz. He speaks like fifteen different languages. However by his sophomore in college he completely lost his hearing (due to genetics). He knew it was a possibility but since he was in his twenties without much issue he wasn't prepared for it. His hearing loss started to show in that he wasn't catching everything people were saying but he tried to compensate and often times he missed what people were saying so he would answer incorrectly. Professors began to treat him beyond poorly, making fun of him, telling him to quit, put him down etc even though he was a straight A student so they knew he was good.

Now we're out of college and he refuses to speak any language other than his native english like his confidence is completely gone.

Would I be overstepping as his friend if I suggest he learn sign languages in the different languages that he knew? Like french sign language (since he spoke french), chinese sign language (since he spoke mandarin) etc. I just don't want him to feel I'm being insensitive. He was really good at languages and I want him to know that he still has options.

All you can do is suggest
I think said in the right way, it would be a wonderful suggestion and is very thoughtful of you.

@midnightrose Thank you. I have no problem offering to learn with him and everything. But how should I approach it?
@Nine9 I'm not completely sure but I'd definitely mention what you said about thinking he's good at languages and wanting him to be able to find joy in doing what he loved before in a new way. Just find a way to show him you care and want him to be happy. I think your good intentions will be recognized.

@midnightrose Thank you! I'll give it a shot.

The better suggestion might be international correspondence interpreter for a government agency: possibly the CIA.

@Success I doubt he'll do that since he refuses to speak the languages and any thing that has him trying to listen he avoids because he can't hear.

@Nine9 Correspondence is textual.

@Success I've been to CIA Q & A's in the beginning he'll be placed in some of everything. That's something he'll try to avoid. And I doubt he wants to work for the CIA or FBI
