Have you ever known anyone who joined a cult?

Or have you ever joined one?

I have a long time friend who was in a cult for 16 years. And it scares me that she still defends it and talks about it as a positive experience. I also know she has not told me the truth about why she joined and a few other aspects of it. And she is usually truthful about most things.

So...why did your friend join? Or why did you join? Why did you or your friend stay as long as you did?

I actually had a neighbor who took off with Jim Jones's cult and she died drinking the kool aid. I was very young, and she had a chimpanzee as a pet.
Strange memory, and true. Lol

I personally was acquainted with 4 people who died in Jonestown and one of them was the woman, a nurse, who killed 126 of the children including her own 2. Few people took the poisoned drink (FlavorAid) willingly and many were injected between the shoulder blades or shot.

For the true researched story, read: A Thousand Lives by Julia Scheer.

You know they're considering putting up a memorial statue? Or large piece of art. It's interesting how some people are so against the memorial.
I was young when it happened, but I remember the news stories and the pictures in Time or some magazine.... very powerful and oh so tragic.
Thank you for the book recommendation. I'm curious

@rottenrobi: The memorial is in the Bay area and it was put up years ago. The big controversy was over whether to include the name of Jim Jones. Steven Jones, a survivor and son of Jim Jones, wanted it on there. Others objected strenuously. It was included. The survivors are still divided into various factions in their opinions of it.

Yes once their sucked in by it you can't get through to them. They usually don't remain friends with people outside the cult either.
