I wish people were more direct.

Was supposed to be going out for dinner tonight for my friends birthday but it was rearranged to a lunch which I couldn’t go to ‘cause I already had lunch plans today.

So...

Me: what you doing tonight?
Friend: just a quiet one.
Me: wanna do lunch tomorrow?
Friend: I take it youre busy tonight then?
Me: well, no. But you said you were having a quiet one!
Friend: I’m easy like.
Me: let’s try this again shall we. What are you doing tonight?
Friend: nothing. Want to go for a drink?
Me: perfect! What time?

Too much fannying about for my brain to be bothered with. Lol!

Yes. But we avoid rejection by making an oblique approach -instead of 'wanna go have a drink' we ask 'what are you doing?'
@Mamapolo2016 dunno if it was about rejection. Just wanted to know what he was doin’? Lol!
@SevenTierCrazyCake Well, with 'wanna go have a drink' you'd get 'sure' or 'no' and cut right to the chaser.
@Mamapolo2016 probably. But what are you doing? Is just a standard opener here.
