Would you rather have a small circle of fiercely loyal friends, or a large network of useful contacts?

why not both? but if it was mutually exclusive as a choice, id prefer the large network personally

@Zaxel There's no reason they have to be mutually exclusive in practice. It's just a thought experiment.

I tend to value stronger bonds, but I can see the value of being able to "call in" favors logically.

It's two different kinds of security.

@YourBuddyRandall strong bonds are good for emotional security and radical emergencies (provided its strong enough) but i find that large networks are a security in a prosperous sense, it helps you move forward rather than 'get by'. so if i had to argue which one was superior, its the large network...aside from the emotional factor from strong bonds which cannot be replicated in a large network.
