why are people meaner online then they are in real life?

Has anyone else ran into this , Is it because they can hide behind the screen ?

Absolutely---and the short answer is yes. People can pretend they're not speaking with real live human beings when they're not facing someone, not looking them in the eye. They're also freer to say ridiculous things when they know they're not risking a punch in the nose.
