Males and giving nicknames to female friends?

Why do males/ guys give nicknames to some of their female friends like bunny, kat, angel ect and other females they have been friends with forever aren't?

I dont generally do that, but i do use "kid" to males and females.

I have had females call me nicknames and some weren't pleasant, hehe
;)
