You can attempt to reconnect. I had the same experience with a friend who was close in late teens/early 20s and then disappeared. I ran into him in a store, after 3-4 years and he wanted to reconnect. It didn't really work out, and his wife told him that he was really rotten to cut me out like that, since her sister is friends with my cousin's wife's sister -- unknown until I ran into him and he wanted to reconnect.
