My journey today

From the sky, looking west, I saw her life.

A million shades of green dissolved into the haze, a blue banner stretched above. Amid those rolling hills, the countless trees, the winding roads and scattered white roofs—bounded by the long, slender waters of Barkley and Kentucky Lakes, fading into the distance—she was there, unseen.

How long had it taken me to come this close? Ten years? Twelve? Fifteen?

And yet I was still far too far away to hear her voice, to catch her scent, to see the colors in her hair come alive in the sunlight. Too far away to watch her at her work, to wait for that moment when she might look up, for no reason she could name, and wonder.

I had come so close.

Close enough to see the landscape of her life spread beneath me.

But not close enough to touch any part of it.

She might as well have been a million miles away.

An impossible distance, still.
