My actual response is this.
I often go overboard to show the people in my life that I care for them for two reasons. Number one, I do genuinely care. Number 2, I'm dealing with the subconscious fear and reality that there's someone better out there who can fulfill the role I play in their life better than I can.

I do continue to do so but it's a bit hit and miss regarding the appreciation of my endeavours if I'm honest.
