Uncorked Loire Valley

Loire Valley wine history spans over 2,000 years, with roots in the 1st-century Roman settlement of Gaul. Known as the "Garden of France," the region became a major wine hub by the 5th century. Monastic orders in the Middle Ages expanded vineyard production, while the Loire River served as a crucial trade route for exporting acclaimed wines to England and northern Europe, notably through Dutch merchant. During World War II (1939-1945), Loire Valley wine producers actively resisted Nazi occupation by hiding, camouflaging, and rationing stocks to prevent looting. Iconic producers like Domaine Huet hid wines in limestone caves, while others used clever ruses to protect supplies, with some wineries even aiding the Resistance by transporting agents in wine barrels
