Potato mental health journey
I was seeing a psychotherapist for a few months but I could definitely tell how inexperienced she was… She was really of no help in the sense that I was the one leading the session and just talking and talking .. and she is just listening 🤷🏽♀ and by the end of the session, great, see you later..
While that clinic is specialized in ADHD, and I did want to have someone with ADHD speciality, I was clear that I needed someone who is more than just an ADHD coach, to talk through “comorbid disorders” such as anxiety but also family trauma or dysfunctional family relationships which I think is a root cause for many if not everything that I suffer in terms of mental health.
Not that I am blaming my family for what is wrong in my life, nope, I am an adult and I take full responsibility for anything that goes wrong in my life.
I have also managed to build a good life for myself that was literally just a dream for me.. I’d day dream about my current life, while in my dark room and thinking.. hmm I wonder if I am just lying to myself.. But it came true.. and it was smoother and easier than I ever thought..
Yet when it comes to mental health and deeply rooted issues, family relations, parents, and early childhood, play a HUGE role!! They shape who we are today! and yet again, not going to blame every mental issue I have on them, because surely I contributed to the severity with the way I dealt with it as an adult, but are they involved?? Hell yes, heavily.. and if this is talked through and resolved.. I genuinely think a lot more in my life would naturally get resolved..
But that psychotherapist seemed prepared to teach me about ADHD however everything she told me, I knew very well! I heavily researched ADHD and learned about all its issues, as well as strategies etc.. besides, I love psychology and so even before getting diagnosed, I had read about it and have always suspected that I have it but never bothered to get diagnosed. Funnily, even sometimes when I asked her about how to manage a symptom, she did not have an answer, and started researching online 🤷🏽♀ Well I could do that! I am not joking, but at times, I felt I had more information about psychology than her, and this is because I read a lot about it, but come on!!
So I stopped seeing her and this time I looked for a psychologist and not a psychotherapist.. I could be wrong, but so far I met two psychotherapist who don’t seem to know how to lead or ask good questions.. maybe these two were just bad examples who knows.. but this time I wanted someone who is definitely experienced given they have earned their MD.
I had my first therapy session with the new psychologist on Monday. So it was not a full session, but more of introductions etc.. but she asked a lot of questions that naturally led to my family .. but it wasn’t like any deep talk about them just yet.. she also asked me one question that I answered confidently on the spot but then the question resonated with me after the session and it left me wondering if I answered correctly and I decided I will ask her for more clarification on this question next time we meet to see if I answered correctly..
Also, following that one session and the brief talk about my family, I’ve had two dreams about my sister that were very telling. Now they do visit my dreams from time to time, but to have two dreams in a row, this is not usual and that made me think the brief talk we had touched a nerve.
That made me think.. hopefully I got the right one this time because I am tired of moving and switching and I really just want to find a good one to stick with.. Also psychologists for some reason are more rare to find and most clinics offer psychotherapists for some reason.
She has a long vacation coming up, so I won’t see her until almost end of this month.. but i am more than happy to wait if she is the right one because it is very difficult to find good therapists.. Fingers crossed 🤞🏽
