It's a weird viral infection; you kinda sorta have to get it on purpose, but not exactly to the point of seeking out the virus specifically (you'll get something worse instead-I guarantee it). Ignoring/not having access to common hygiene and/or being immunocompromised, as well as having a living/working environment that's moderately unsanitary (or worse), makes it more likely to acquire the virus. Like I said, a weird one, like that one shareware title that never got a full release but we all wanted it to.
...
Addendum:
It's often mistaken for Ringworm; Ringworm is a fungal infection.

@Amyrakunejo Interesting! I personally never heard of it (everyone seems to know of it, so maybe I am just ignorant lol or could it be more common in North America? I really never heard of such name). But someone on the team said she got it from a kid in her family and she has been absent. At first I thought it was something insignificant but she has been gone for two days plus the weekend. So four days and still not well!

@TexChik got the actual name of the disease correct, but it is rarely referred to as such, @BittersweetPotato. It can also come from certain water sources, so it's not just about washing hands.
