So I work with an all US team these days and someone on the team has to mention she is a NewYorker, should we be impressed or something?

People from "the City" , esp, think of it highly. I lived "upstate" a couple years. I found many NYC'ers amazingly provincial... Not what I expected.

While blunt and brusque, the people I met were kind and would chip in when needed.
