I think Americans are taught/told that America first is part of the mindset from a young age.
Thus, in many Americans minds, the rest of the world follows America rather than seeing that other realities exist in other countries at the same time as their own.
Never has this been so true as in the current covid era.
The misinformation and lack of general information that the rest of us get from multiple sources is really eye-opening when you get into discussion with some of them on the subject.
