Well its a stress hormone typically used to alert other grass that something is coming. Plants have the ability to "bunker" which has the plant reroute all sugar and water back to the roots which allows it to grow back faster. The grass you cut alerts the grass on the other side of the lawn to hunker down and prepare for the worst
