Ice Cream for Breakfast

Mom and Dad were visiting from their home, 200 miles away. They weren’t the kind of parents who think the road runs only one way.

My daughter was about three. We had stayed up longer than customary, swapping stories, laughing.

Dad and my daughter woke up early and as was his way, he decided to take her for ice cream at 6:30 am. They left a note.

Later, we learned about the ice cream. At a little non-chain diner a couple of miles away, they (my daughter barefoot and still in her little nightgown), sat down at a table. Almost immediately, two PA state policemen came in for coffee and sat on the other side.

Dad whispered to his granddaughter, “Don’t let them see your bare feet.”

She asked why, which was when Dad realized he was in a situation. Hesitantly he said, “Well, because you’re supposed to wear shoes in a restaurant.” My daughter gave him a disappointed look. Then she slipped down off her chair and walked up to the officers. They looked down at her and smiled. She lifted one chubby baby foot and announced , “Don’t got my shoes. Grandpa says I’m a’posed to have shoes.”

The officers chuckled and told her it was okay. No worries.

She trotted back to Grandpa. “The peacemen said I don’t have to have shoes, but just me.” She leaned under the table to verify that Grandpa was legally shod, then settled back to eat her breakfast ice cream.
