Interesting. Being a "southpaw", I’m sure I have. 😄

@bijouxbroussard
Approximately 10% of the world's population is estimated to be left-handed.
And I think 5 of the past 7 presidents were lefty too ? I don’t remember exactly though.

@bijouxbroussard Do you have any idea where the term "southpaw" comes from? I am trying to think of how one would regard "facing west" as natural, so that our left hands are to the south.
@DrWatson I was once told it’s a baseball reference but I’m not certain.
DrWatson · 70-79, M
@bijouxbroussard Yes, left-handed pitchers are called southpaws, and now that I think about it, I have not heard the term in other contexts. Still not sure why "south" though. A left and a right handed pitcher will stand facing opposite directions, so the position of their throwing arms will be the same.
@DrWatson Here’s one possible explanation:
The “American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language” cites the conventional wisdom that the word “southpaw” originated “from the practice in baseball of arranging the diamond with the batter facing east to avoid the afternoon sun. A left-handed pitcher facing west would therefore have his pitching arm toward the south of the diamond.”

@bijouxbroussard I guess that makes sense, but when he actually pitches he is not standing with his chest toward the batter, which is why I was confused.
@DrWatson I see…

@DrWatson, @bijouxbroussard Southpaw is also used in Boxing for a fighter who leads with his right (and defends with his left)
@RunTheJulz Yes…all left-handed:

Gerald Ford
Ronald Reagan
George HW Bush
Bill Clinton
Barack Obama
@ArtieKat Very interesting.
