Three decades later, Reuben and Rose knew they wanted their company’s name to evoke an aura of the old-world craftsmanship. “The number one thing was to get a foreign sounding name.” Both Jews of Polish descent, Reuben and Rose were drawn to the Danish language (“The only country which saved the Jews during World War II was Denmark,” Reuben said). And so he cobbled together a name: Häagen-Dazs. A fine, Danish-sounding name that means…

Absolutely nothing.

“Häagen-Dazs doesn’t mean anything,” Mattus said. “[But] it would attract attention, especially with the umlaut.”

It is unclear whether or not Mattus knew that the Danish language doesn’t even use umlauts—but, happily, the ploy paid off.

@KiwiBird Hahaha!! I love creative marketing!
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
@sarabee1995 New Zealand's biggest marketing coup was the name Kiwifruit. After all they are from China and were known as Chinese Gooseberries. Actually the growers still sometimes refer to them as Chink Berries. A not very PC name and blatantly racist.

@KiwiBird Wait! What? They are not native to the land of kiwis???? 😲

And how deliciously ironic that unscrupulous Chinese traders have tried to pass off domestically grown kiwifruits as imports.

@KiwiBird Interesting that the UK never got back in the game after their initial failure. 🤔
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
@sarabee1995 Yeah no idea. You plant them one male to eight female. The production per hectare figures are interesting. I didn't realise China grew so much. They are a great export crop because as long as the sugar levels pass a specific point you can pick them rock hard and they will still ripen. If you get hard ones....put them in a paper bag with a banana. Those figures come from the US Dept for agriculture.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, FVIP
@KiwiBird That's cool. Why include the banana though?
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
@sarabee1995 Really you did not know this?

"Bananas make other fruit ripen because they release a gas called ethene."

"This gas causes ripening, or softening of fruit by the breakdown of cell walls, conversion of starches to sugars and the disappearance of acids.

"Some fruits, like oranges, don't respond to ethene, but there are many processes in plants that respond to ethene as a signal."

Not a plastic bag, usually brown paper....Bananas will also ripen quicker in a paper bag."

Edit. As an aside most ripening fruits emit ethene just that the banana is better at it. I learnt that today.

@KiwiBird Lol, nope. I did not know this. 😁
