Why does coffee taste like earwax ?

I've never tasted a coffee which isn't toe-curlingly bitter. Any drink I have to add 5 or 6 spoons of sugar to make it barely palatable isn't worth drinking. Plus I don't add sugar to anything and I don't want to start now.
