Assuming this is a real incident.


You have two possibilities here.


1. you have religious zealots in pretty much all monotheistic religions largely because one of the core ideas is their god is the only real one and so everyone else by definition is a heretic.


2. Because of the first point you also have political dimensions to this. Entire continents were conquered and forcibly converted for one faith or another.

Deus Vult or God Wills it. Is the justification you will find behind rivers of blood and centuries of suffering.

That also generates visceral and emotional responses from people.
