Golden drinks are nicer when it's warm, the dark ones for some reason (which I don't know) keep you warm.
Hobgoblin Gold is my drink of choice. But I can recommend Old Speckled Hen, Black Sheep (these are all real ales BTW and not lagers). The real flavoursome ones are McEwan's Champion, Hobgoblin King and XXXB but these are all dark beers. I know I've missed some recommendations out but that's what I can remember.
