why are veggie burgers and bangers so named when there is no meat in them

If it doesn't have meat in it . It isn't a burger or a banger/sausage.

@sighmeupforthat: As far as I know, the word "burger" is a back-formation from "hamburger", which itself was derived from "Hamburg". There was a popular misconception that hamburgers were originally made from ham rather than beef, and so the word "beefburger" was coined to hopefully dispel that myth. From that, the word "burger" became a word in its own right.
