One of the first jobs of my life and how I closed a whole business down
I used to work at a wrap restaurant in Ann Arbor, Michigan while I was going to school.
Knowing that this was one of the first jobs I ever had in my life I worked very very hard to run that restaurant. I had no precedent in my life about what it was like to work at a job so I took ownership of every operation in that business.
The owner really took advantage of this and pretty much just kicked back in the dining room while I pretty much ran the entire business.
This went on for about 3 months. I was pretty exhausted but I figured that this was just what working was like.
The owners started telling me to cut corners like cutting off the moldy parts of foods. We resold food that was spoiled. Customers got sick.
The final straw was when one night some girl who worked there was flirting with me. She was waiting for me to get off work so I could go to a party with her. But the owner intentionally made me stay later to avoid that I would go out with her and told her she had to leave.
So I just never showed up to work ever again.
I remember they called me begging for me to come back and offering more money but nothing phenomenal.
About 6 months later that business shut down.
I think it wasn't until I was in my mid 20s that I learned what an adequate amount of effort a little more than minimum wage can afford and started behaving accordingly.
I never forget that restaurant though because I worked so hard there and hated that job so much.
