What are there so few national US fast food chains that offer hot dogs?

The only one that I can think of is DQ

I am old enough to remember when foot-long chili dogs were really popular and available at a lot of drive-ins and at little chili-dog stands.

Growing up in New York, I experienced hot dogs as something everyone loved to eat.

Then I moved to the upper Midwest, and everyone was eating bratwurst on those buns (which are referred to as brat buns, not hot dog buns.)

I suspect that the popularity of hot dogs in uneven, geographically.

@DrWatson Some like smoked sausage or hot links here in Oklahoma for sandwiches. Little country convenience stores will often sell those.

@DrWatson having portable hot dog vendors in the city.
I’d imagine there’s not enough demand.

A&W Rootbeer stands used to sell them
cause its gas station food

@orioninthenight Yes, in some areas, that is pretty much the only place you'll find them. But don't say "gas station food" to someone who takes pride in Nathan's hot dog stand at Coney Island.
