Because it's not impressive to see people who usually pig out either way pig out.
Really the thing is, they are more lonely over there and people do not want to eat alone. I think I remember reading that it makes people feel less isolated, because eating is seen as more social in certain Asian nations, but they are more alienated now, so it is quite sad.
