all figs sold in supermarkets and those grown at home don't need or have wasps in them to pollenate the fruit

Agreed, I’ve been around figs and fig trees all my life @saragoodtimes and I never see wasps around them, but they do attract June bugs.

@BackyardShaman and now here in Pa spotted lanternfly. my landscaper treats mine for bugs

@saragoodtimes My grandfather has two fig trees in his garden in the Bronx, of all places. There were no wasps, but there were plenty of delicious figs.

@DrWatson my Great Grandfather brought cuttings from the old country with him and all ours are derived from his trees. my landscaper has mine in a bush rather than a tree. it delivers plenty of fruit and is easier to protect in winter

@saragoodtimes My grandfather's were cuttings from Italy :)

@saragoodtimes red figs don't, but white figs would turn sour and wilt away early if they don't

@Nanori now that I didn't know and explains a lot. My neighbors figs were the red figs.
There's simply no way that wasps would be allowed around kids.

@DeWayfarer those are also tiny wasps, like 2mm each 😁
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Nanori if any of us kids had noticed, and there were a lot at that time, none of us would have even considered trying them. You know how kids are. They not only notice the smallest things yet are easily grossed out. Every kid in the neighborhood wouldn't have accepted those figs.

@BackyardShaman The wasps that pollinate figs are not the big stripy kind.
