A question for the Americans

How dare you?

No, I'm joking, that's not it. I am having my nightly bowl of cereal (why does it taste much better at night than in the morning?) and I found myself wondering 'what actually is oatmeal'? Is it what everyone else calls porridge (an actual 'meal' of oats)?

Oatmeal is a type of porridge. Since technically porridge can be made from different types of grain, but if it's being made from milled oats, then it's oatmeal. Another popular porridge in the USA is grits. It's most popular in the Southern USA and is made from corn.

@Thespis and ketchup should NOT be put on it

@Pretzel Does anyone do that? 🤢

@helsbels yeah, there was a politician that was not from the southern US (where they were more common) and was served grits - and he either put ketchup on them or asked if you put ketchup on them.

made the national news for a day or two :)

@Pretzel Oh then that's forgiveable (to me!)
But thinking about what porridge looks like, it shouldn't be a mistake you could possibly make.

@helsbels nope. we do go crazy trying to disguise the flavor (of wall paper paste) by putting syrup or brown sugar etc on the oatmeal
