Hey, Vegemite Is Not Half Bad….

I just tried it for the first time. Did what an Aussie lady recommended and toasted a (keto) bread (waffle) with some butter melted on it and just put a tiny bit on it. Nice savory flavor. Was looking for something with flavor that wasn’t sweet to put on toast.

Yep. The secret is to spread it on so thin that you can see through the streaks.
walabby · 61-69, M
@Bushranger It is a personal thing. I used to suck on a teaspoon full of it when I was a kid.
For Vegemite virgins it's best to start off carefully... :D

@walabby I licked the butter knife after I spread the Vegemite and I liked it 😂

@walabby Vegemite virgins sounds like a group here. I agree. I have it thick and black like my heart

I don't know why or really even what it is but it sounds like it ought to be good. You ever get that? When a word seems to have a quality of the thing it is describing? Odd...

I'll try it some time if I can. Always good to try new food or whatever.

@cherokeepatti Probably because Marmite is grown in people's asses.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@SW-User Maybe you shouldn’t be trying Vegemite either. Although I found nothing remotely assy about it.
SW-User
@cherokeepatti Ah. I thought it sounded like it might be vegetable based and have something veggie burger about it. Guess not. 🤣

I don't like either one, but then again, it's been years since I tried them, so maybe I'll give it a go again. When you're in the grocery store, Walmart, or health food store, check the International and/or Condiments sections, near the jams, jellies, peanut butter. Marmite might be there. When I'm looking for something particular, I check online with the stores nearby. If they have it, I can note the aisle or section they're in.

@cherokeepatti Unfortunately, ginger is one of those things that I keep trying to go back to because I know it's good for me but it's another difficult one for me. It has a perfumy taste for some weird reason. So does Rosemary, Cardamom, and a few others. Cilantro tastes like soap and I can't even begin to tell you how raw green peppers taste to me. I'm assuming I have some sort of an allergy to these things and my taste buds reject them to keep me from becoming ill. But, I know what you mean about craving umami. I do too.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@SW-User Cilantro disgust can be genetic, there is a gene that is a marker for that. or maybe you are a super taster and they overwhelm your tastebuds.

@cherokeepatti It's a possibility. I've always had a very sensitive sense of smell and taste.

I love Marmite on toast. I think it’s the same a Vegemite. You only need a scraping of it, as the flavor is so intense.
have you tried almond butter? it's good for toast and not sweet. or avocado with an egg on top. never tried vegemite, i've heard it's a love/hate thing.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@lovelywarpedlemon I have almond butter, it’s good too. I like Worcestershire sauce a lot, it is an umami flavor, so I figured I would also like Vegemite. Glad I heeded the warnings not to use much, it is a flavor that goes a long ways.

You xan make vegemitw and cheese toasted sandwiches too and they are nice. Or add a splash of Worcester sauce to your cheese on toast bwfore grilling it.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@meggie thanks for that idea, it sounds good
HazyDayz · 36-40
Yeah it’s like marmite, very tasty. Bovril is nice too if you can get it.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@HazyDayz Have never seen Bovril or heard of it. I think they don’t even sell Marmite here except maybe online. Vegemite seems pricey but considering it’s imported and a tiny bit will go a long way it will be worth what I paid for it.
HazyDayz · 36-40
@cherokeepatti I just looked it up and apparently it’s illegal to import bovril in to the us. Apparently it’s bc of mad cow disease fears. Shame bc it’s nice. Beef paste tho basically, like vegemite but less salty tasting and more savoury beefy tasting.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@HazyDayz I have a jar of condensed beef bouillon paste that I add to beef soups and stews. I imagine Bovril tastes a lot like that. And I just might have to try spreading a little bit of the beef bouillon on my toast sometime to test it out.

Once you go Vegemite you’ll never go back
OnePatheticClown · 51-55, M
Marmite's slightly less evil cousin...
Bushmanoz · 56-60, M
Its a staple here. I have it daily on toast or as a sandwich for lunch. Aussies quite often get people to try it spread thick like Nutella which is a dick move. It feels like it burns if you arent used to it. Marmite is like Vegemite mixed with sugar.

Try spreading it on bread then put a bit of grated tasty cheese over it. Cut the bread into 3 fingers and cook in the oven on a low heat until cheese melts. They Mke great snacks. Put them in an airtight container and they last days..here even if a whole load is used they are eaten in a day or 2.
