I wish a part time job was enough and things were not so expensive

Even some basic groceries last Monday I went to Walmart. I spent not even for a full grocery list but just a few items was $114 dollars. I am going to have to be very careful when I live on my own even with part time work that’s remote and flexible because things are expensive. And this was at Walmart for Pete’s sake. Between working part time when I get freelance work that is remote and flexible and disability I wonder if I will make enough to live off of. I can’t afford to pay full price for everything including rent or mortgages. I don’t know if getting off disability will be a good idea though. Part of me wants to but then after I might lose some of my protections like government state healthcare and subsidized housing to pay affordable rent. I would be lucky to make anywhere between $50,000-$100,000 annually but that doesn’t seem like enough to live off of anymore after taxes without struggling. Things are getting more expensive as time goes on. I get off my benefits I will lose my safety net as much as it pains me to be on it sometimes. Hell even making $25,000-$45,000 will stop getting any help even though after taxes that is not much money at all. My parents don’t want me to jeopardize my benefits as it’s taken them four years to get me them or maybe it was three years for my mental disabilities. I can work part time and make up to about $1, 500-$1,600 per month without losing my benefits but it’s not much to have. I can’t have more than $2,000 in financial assets because once that goes over my benefits will get cut. I always thought I would do better with myself than be on welfare to be honest when I was younger. I do have disabilities though but I feel I should be able to work with the right amount of flexibility, independence, autonomy, and freedom in my work. A flexible schedule and remote work is crucial as I no longer have reliable transportation to get around. I would rather be paid per project, per word, per page, per audio hour, per hour, per image/graphic/illustration, etc. for example I could say commit to 20-30 hours per week but get to decide when, where, and how I do the work, for example if I need a break I can take it. I could work for long extended periods or short bursts as long as I deliver an excellent work product and get it done by the due date. A career or job that lets me make my own structure is the best so I can accommodate my life and my work flexes around my life. I also like consistent work or having enough work each week and month and not having to worry about finding recurring income streams. I would rather work for an agency that handles the admin and has clients ready for you rather than finding my own clients. That way I can just focus on my work role. It could be something like translation, transcription, proofreading and editing, writing and blogging, many other industries. I would rather work as a self employed independent contractor/freelancer or employee basis. I just wish part time work was enough to sustain myself completely. I wish things were not so expensive. I also wish I was wealthy and rich too but that’s probably not going to happen especially being on social security. In a way being on disability benefits is holding me back. But if I lose disability I lose my safety net in case I have a spell where I get less work. It’s much more complicated than just saying ok get off disability benefits and make up for it. I have a lot that’s included with those benefits. I know I must sound like a leech but I have trouble holding down a full time employee job that would give me insurance and healthcare benefits. Life is complicated.

Your parents are right. Although maybe not for the same reasons I see. Forget politics and who is to blame, the fact is that harsher economic times are coming. The worst of times to lose any safety net.. And as the economy gets worse, your opportunities for freelance and other work you ban accept will likely reduce or even dry up. And those safety nets will be the only thing left. Simply because people without your challenges may be competition better ably to undercut your rates. I counsel you that caution and the preserve all you already have may be need the wise choice..😷
