This brings back memories of the shift to the two income family. In the eighties I worked in a new demonstration project child care center for the infants and toddlers of working moms in Honolulu. Both parents worked, but we never mentioned working fathers.
The cost per month was more than the mothers earned in most cases, but they were keeping their jobs by not taking two years or even five away from their firms. These ivy league women were always paid way less than men, but any minute things were going to change! No one would dare listen to the negative owner of that child care center, who poitnted out the hard work and lowering expectations- me.
They formed a long waiting list for my services, despite me telling them to go home and collect AFDC and raise their own children. Then there was no more AFDC. No choice. No way out.
Welcome the lower birth rates and shrinking life span. No Dad's in 1988 wanted anything to do with any woman who didn't have a job. Here we are!
