Question for Canadians: Does anyone use National Bank of Canada and especially their trading platform?

To my knowledge, they are the only trading platform in Canada that offers zero commission (which is crazy that we are still charged commission when the US platforms moved to zero commissions loong time ago).

I am still suspicious about them and think if they are offering zero commissions, there must be a catch somewhere.

They do charge an annual $100 for accounts below 20k but methinks even with that they are cheaper if you are someone who trades consistently and sieze opportunities

If you don`t like how things are done here then move to the US. 🤨

Have you checked with other brokerages? TD Ameritrade was bought by Schwab in 2023. No minimums or commissions on trades. Futures etc still have charges.

@Crazywaterspring That is in the US but not Canada. Most brokers in the US if not all charge no commission on trades because if they do they won’t be competitive. (Almost all of them charge fees still on option/forward and future contracts m). But they accept no one from outside the US. Whereas in Canada we are still charged a lot of money in commissions and I am hoping with more brokers moving into the Canadian market that it will become more competitive and move to zero commission

@BittersweetPotato Sounds like a great business opportunity for a company who may need to change Canadian securities law.

You could check with an American broker if you would be allowed to open an account. You would probably have to present yourself in person to open and to fund the account.
