Of course, it depends on lifestyle, healthcare expenses, etc. I am talking about just living, eating, and having a place to live.

There's a lot of "it depends." You want a return on that money because inflation is going to cut into it, but you also want a return OF that money. So, what about medical expenses? Seven years of retirement before Social Security kicks in? Do you own or rent, and where in the country, and what are your projected expenses? How long will you be living independently?

What I would do, in my area, is to buy a three bedroom house and rent out two of the rooms to other friendlies. Where I am, even renting a room is a thousand dollars a month. That covers a lot of my taxes, upkeep, and utilities. I can diversify the rest with dividend paying investments in the 10% range and have a checking account in the 5% range, and maybe some in index funds. That should work, although joint replacement, open heart surgery, or a host of other unexpected medical needs could fuck up my day for the rest of my life.
