Story time:
Last night was my rest day from strength and conditioning and I planned on just recovering and doing a hard heat exposure session in the sauna.
Everything was going as planned, I did a hard sauna session that almost killed me and cleaned up to teach some classes.
Well, today both of the wrestling coaches were out so I covered that time slot.
We had a new kid drop in who was a high school wrestler. Good athlete but nothing special. Went through the class, got tired but made it through. At the end of class he calls me out to wrestle with him. I’m exhausted from the sauna session but I’m a type A so I commence to whupping his ass. So, I take him down, ride him like a pony and he says: “you’re not going to pin me. I immediately hit him with a quarter Nelson and pinned him. He acted surprised but whatever. On to BJJ.
He sticks around for live rolls, picks out the small guys, still gets subbed but thinks he doing something. I see in his mind he’s thinking he’s the shit and then he picks a 12 year old, that trains with my instructor Professor Hammonds, and tries to go super hard with him….
Again, I’m exhausted and kinda dehydrated from the sauna and had already changed out of my grappling gear and was coaching from the sideline. Well,, as he’s roughing up the 12 year old I head to the back and throw on some board shorts and a grabbed him for the last round.
We start the roll from standing and snapped him down and guillotined him in 3 seconds. Then did it again. Then threw him and he turned his back so I choked him again. After about 8 or 9 submissions he was noticeably frustrated like this wasn’t supposed to be happening.
The bell rings, we close class with a Q&A and go change to leave. This kid comes up to me and taps me on the shoulder and says:
“I’m going to beat you!”
I said: no you’re not and started walking off the mat.
“He says: yes I will, I felt it when we rolled!”
I sighed and said: “I am 54 and I don’t care if I’m 80 years old, you will never beat me. As a matter of fact, if you come back and train I’m probably going to put you to sleep. You should probably be humble when you walk into a fight gym because this is a great way to get embarrassed.”
He kept going with the that young person bravado until I simply told him, come back to class and I’m going to embarrass you so bad that you’ll never want to grapple again. At this point you are being blatantly disrespectful so now I’m obligated to humble you like a child.
He got teary eyed and I let him know he was going about it the wrong way. If he wants to learn there is a much better way of going about it. I respect your competitive nature but being disrespectful in a fight gym with one of the biggest type A humans on the planet won’t end well for him.
He apologized and said he’d be back on Monday with a different attitude. These kids today must not have had dads in their lives. If I ever went into one of the gyms that I trained at as a young person with a disrespectful attitude my dad would’ve taken me in the parking lot and shot me. I hope he comes back so he can be around young, respectful motivated individuals because he didn’t learn respect at home.
I’m older but still as hungry and competitive as I was at 20. Now I have old man strength and a mental library of ways to hurt you.
Try me if you want.
