NOT SHOWING UP TO THE PODIUM WHEN YOU LOSE:

I know I post a lot of Jiu Jitsu posts, both positive and negative.

Over the years Coaching I've learned many things. I've been humbled and changed my mind on many things I thought I was right or wrong about. I learned, failed and was helped along the way with many of these things.

One thing I have never changed my mind on however, is an athlete not showing up to the podium when they lose. I know that in some situations athletes are injured or maybe we will say that they are new to competition and just didn't know. This weekend after the purple belt OPEN in Nashville my teammates waited for their opponents they defeated (without any debate from anyone) in the semi-finals so they could take their picture for the organization and for their friends, family and of course themselves. After about 20 min the young ladies in charge of the medal stand informed us one of them came, got his medal and told her he “doesn't do pictures” (he of course took his division picture when he won).

Coaches, parents, athletes and teammates: This is one of the most disrespectful things you can do to someone. You only show up when you win? You don't want anyone to see you in a spot other than first place? The second you signed up for the tournament you accepted the rules.

No matter what happened, go get your medal, get on the podium and show some respect. Respect to the athletes you matched with and shared the mat with. Respect for the sport that you practice and love....and most of all, have some respect for yourself. I'm not sure how anyone convinces themselves it's ok to do this, but it happens often—too often in this amazing sport.

Win humbly, lose gracefully, be the example.
