Visiting other Jiu Jitsu schools

A few months ago the family and I were visiting Florida for a vacation and I reached out to the local Jiu Jitsu school in the area to see if I could roll at their gym.

We all need to remember as summer approaches and you start to travel and are looking for a place to train. Keep these in mind as you choose your place to train.

Call ahead of time and find out the following:

a. How much is mat fee?
Most gyms charge a mat fee, but you should not pay more that $30.00. If they do not charge a mat fee, please buy something from their pro shop or help support their competition progam.

b. What color GI can I wear?
Some gyms require white Gi only. Not a deal breaker but you should know before packing.

c. Do you allow me to wear my own GI?
Some gyms will not let you wear your own Gi and ask you to rent one while training there. I personally do not go to these gyms, but if it is your only option and you really want to train then just be prepared finacially.

d. Ask for their gym rules?
All gyms have certain rules that are gray areas, but some black and white rules must be followed at all times. So just get familiar as to not offend their culture. FYI our gym is very non traditional so don't freak out if they have some rules that don't pertain to our gym. For example: we do not care if lower belts ask upper belts to roll. Some schools this is a BIG NO NO.

e. Always leave a review!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We never charge mat fees or ask you to buy something, but reviews are way more important to me as a gym owner. So keep that in mind, even if it was a bad experience.

f. Social media
If they have social media and you have social media take time to give them a shout out on social media.
Hope this helps out and enjoy your travel time. Remember you represent your team as you travel. Be an amazing ambassador of our gym and our culture.
