Why are martial arts experts called Dan?

What if Dan isn't their real name?

Dan means step or grade.Moving up a Dan means moving up to the next level.

@tallpowerhouseblonde I wondered that to. There are no levels in my fights. You fight who you are put against.

@TexChik One.So 1st Dan to 2nd Dan is one belt up,then 2nd Dan to 3rd Dan is the next belt up.

@jeancolby Some fighting arts do not have belts.
