Traditional Jujitsu?

My friend who has been doing it for years talked me into giving it a go. So I did.

As someone who has dabbled in various martial arts over the years, I have concerns about juJitsus effectiveness in live situations.

6 months of doing boxing training and actual sparing would be far more effective.

3rd dan Hapkido here. I’ve long thought that high kicks and throws are just showmanship. Trips, strikes, punches and low kicks or sweeps make much more sense. Hapkido includes a lot of joint locks which are very effective in limited applications.

One almost has to put oneself into the opponent’s grip to execute a throw and one sacrifices both balance and power to deliver a head kick.

Just my opinion.
@redredred Fair points indeed. The amount of senior traditional martial artists I have seen that cannot throw a proper punch is appalling.

I think for any martial art to be in anyway effective it needs to have sparing

Judo is a form of traditional Jiu-jitsu and it's very effective. So is BJJ. Stand up fighting is important, but of it does go to the ground, you need to know how to fall, get out of locks, break limbs, etc.
@basilfawlty89 BJJ isnt a form of traditional Jujitsu. It is a derivative of traditional jujitsu though.

Most traditional JJ suck at ground fighting.

Judo is excellent.

@Ozymandiaz true, I meant BJJ bis effective like Judo, sorry I phrased that like my arse. BJJ is partially descended from Judo, so it makes sense.

Most traditional martial arts aren't taught as combat sports anymore.

There's a jujitsu class that sometimes trains in the same place that I was doing Judo. My sister could knock half those guys out ffs
@SW-User Aye its complete balls like. There are some seriously bullshit martial arts out there. Loads of the Chinese ones especially with Chi and one the touch of death 😂
SW-User
@Ozymandiaz have you seen that Chinese MMA fighter?

I can't remember his name but he got on the Chinese government's bad side by challenging those bullshit artists to fights and knocking them out 🤣
@SW-User Yeah, I have seen that. They have him on internal exile. He lost his social security number so he cant get a job or travel even within China.
