I can only imagine how people suffered under his rule

He helped arm the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and consider how much harm was done

Under his regime college was free, Healthcare was free, gas was 16 cents a liter..
When a couple got married they were given a substantial cash gift from the state, mortgage loans were interest free provided by the government.
If a college graduate with an engineering degree couldn't find a job in his field and had to accept a lower wage job, the government would subsidize his pay to bring it to the level of a worker in his chosen fields until he could find a job in that field..

Today the country is war torn and impoverished, it's people struggling to get by..

Thank goodness he's gone.

@Kingfish1
He wasn't without his flaws and he was a despot by definition but for the most part his people were treated well by their government..

@SW-User well you could say somewhat similar about Saddam in Iraq

What I can tell you is he supplied the IRA with military capability

@yeronlyman i don't doubt you, they also received money for weapons from the US and other countries.
Sadam was much more violent towards his own people and so it's not a good comparison..

@SW-User personally I knew a family who were involved in running the guns and weapons into Ireland from Libya

Those weapons did dreadful harm to innocent people.

I accept that that time in history did eventually lead to the peace process, but so many innocents were effected

Gadaffi the dictator was no saint

@Kingfish1 I disagreed with the provisional IRA… yes

The IRB and the IRA in the rising (1916) and war of independence (1919-1921) I would have supported

@Kingfish1 for the republic? We came from an oppressed country to one of the highest GDP per capita countries that now stands alone

Northern Ireland requires Uk taxpayers Support. Sad really

In my lifetime we may see unity in Ireland
