How do you all feel about multiple universes and timelines in fiction?

I like the idea of multiple universes and timelines but as long as it doesn't get excessive. I think Star Wars should have two alternative but equal universes one where the Disney canon happens and another for the Legends Expanded Universe. I don't mind Mortal Kombat doing this either such as the original MK game through MK: Armageddon being the original timeline, MK9 through MK11 being an alternate timeline, the newest game being in a timeline of its own, MK: Onslaught being its own timeline, the 90s MK movies as well as MK: Conquest (I don't know where Defenders of the Realms would be) being there own timeline and the new movies being a cinematic universe along with the MK: Legends films being there own timeline. I do feel as as long as they limit how much they do this it's fine to have multiple continuities.
