When I was in grade school, the girls had to wear dresses and skirts only. By the time I got to high school. I had to wear skirts as a freshman and then, in my sophomore year, girls were allowed to wear slacks and both sexes blue jeans.

Today, grammar school kids wear nice clothes in one color. For example, I have passed my old school and the kids are all wearing navy blue outfits.

@SW-User That seems to be the thing nowadays. But when I was in grade school, my sister and I were attending in late 1950's - early 1960's. In those days (before they invented the light bulb) you had to look like a lady. In high school, kids wore more jeans than anything. I always hated the overly-long blue jeans that some guys wore with ratty hemlines - and even bare feet in some cases.

@nevergiveup I agree. Uniforms have many advantages

@harveyrider yes, but easy to pull up for a paddling shouldn’t be one.....i was in 5th grade...

@SW-User they are smart, help to create a positive atmosphere for learning and largely eliminate competition to wear more and more fashionable clothing
@SW-User Are kids still paddled in the US
MaryJanine · 61-69, F
@nevergiveup They might be in some very strict districts or states, but they are getting fewer and further between, In my own home state (Illinois) there isn't any more school paddlings. When my parents were kids, it was allowed. By the time they got married and had children, the public schools didn't allow it at all.

@MaryJanine not in Washington state where I am.

@SW-User That's nice to know - that there are still places, I mean. Indiana used to have it for a long time (I don't know if they still do) and Ohio and Pennsylvania gradually weeded it out of fashion. I think the Ohio ban happened after a girl who got paddled had a resultant blood blister that lasted for months afterward - and she had only been hit once.

@MaryJanine Sorry, I might have said wrong, not allowed here.....

@SW-User No need to apologize. I can still hear that hated eighth grade teacher, to this day, telling each girl as they passed her, "You're not on the beach!" Well, she was the same one who hit the boys in the back of their heads if they didn't remove their hats before entering the hall. She usually managed to knock the hats off, landing on the floor. I always thought that was a dumb rule when it was snowing and cold outside.
