I Hate Dress Code

I am a teacher, and I understand that some things are unacceptable to wear in a school environment, but some things are so stupid. A girl in my class, one of the nicest and smartest girls I’ve ever met in my life, she is one of those kids who will never get in trouble, and never really talks back to anyone, very nice young lady. This poor child was sent home crying out of frustration because she wore ripped jeans. Oh my god, it wasn’t bad at all, it was like a little above the knee that was ripped, and when she put her hands down, the ripped part was inches away from her fingertips, which is what the rule has been always, that it always has to be finger length. It’s unbelievable, everyone in the school wears ripped jeans, and even colored hair and no one has said anything, but they decide to pick on the ones that don’t ever do anything wrong. It’s insane, and it frustrates me that I don’t have a say in it. It’s so unfair, we have some many restrictions on the girls, we are teaching them that their body is a distraction, that is unacceptable in my book, and then we wonder why so many woman have body image issues. I am waiting for Monday so I can talk to her in private, and tell her how proud I am of her for speaking her mind and expressing her opinion on something that is unjust. Why should her pants interfere with her education? Why should her clothes determine weather she gets to get to class? That’s insane, we are putting appearance before education!!!
Why is she the problem when everyone else does it and nobody says anything about it?

You have an administrative problem, combined with targetting/profiling.
This can be very difficult to reverse, because first, you have to find out “why”.
Why was this child in particular targetted?
At the age of 52 I got sent home from work to change from my inappropriate attire. My offense was fishnet stockings. I DID know they were forbidden in the dress code but I thought since these were knee highs worn under black wool slacks and only about a square inch of depraved seductive female flesh was showing on the top of my foot....I was wrong.

Glad you called her aside and praised her. You probably made her day. I’m retired from education. I’m glad there are those like you who look out for the kids
