Runs in pantyhose/tights

Any tips on how I can avoid these? I hate getting dressed up for events/parties etc, only to ruin it at times by getting a run in a new or pair.

I was raised to wear proper stockings and still do. At least if one stocking has a run in it I usually have another spare to match!
