Originally jeans were work clothes, adopted by hippies because they were inexpensive, and anti "establishment." In the 70's nearly eeryone lived in jeans and t-shirts.

But after 50 years people are ready for a change. I think Jeans will always be around, perhaps more for their original purpose as rugged work clothes, rather than everyday wear.

@badminton
adopted by hippies because they were inexpensive, and anti "establishment.
Hippies emerged in about 1967 - the Summer Of Love. If you read any Jack Kerouac you will know that he, Allen Ginsberg, William S Burroughs - the original beatniks - were wearing jeans back in the late 1940s.

@ArtieKat Newspaper columnist Herb Caen mentioned 'beatniks" wearing jeans in the 1950's. He said before that the only people he saw wearing jeans were Mexican laborers.
